Zurich, Switzerland (Le Temps, Fre) – A painting by Giovanni Giacometti, "The Mother," sold at a Christie’s auction Tuesday night for CHF3.24 million, a record auction price for a work by the artist. It had been estimated at CHF1.2-1.8m. Ferdinand Hodler’s work, which has for some time led the Swiss art market, had mixed results. "Thunersee mit Stockhornkette im Winter" sold for CHF3.84m, below its estimated CHF4-6m price, but "Piz Corvatsch" went for CHF3.48m, well above its estimated CHF1.8-2.5m.
Hodler’s work set a record in June 2007 with the sale of "Lac Léman vu de Saint-Prex" for CHF10.9m, when it had been estimated at CHF4-6m.
