Bern, Switzerland (Le Temps, Fre) - Swiss citizens are likely to go to the polls in February to vote on the free movement of people being extended to Romania and Bulgaira, as well as on whether or not to accept the new biometric passports.

The extreme right, which is responsible for both voting initiatives, barely squeaked under the federal deadline for delivering enough signed petitions, 50,000 for the free movement of people, to force a referendum. The chancellory will announce a vote only once the signatues have been verified. The government has come out strongly against the UDC-spnsored motion on free movement, saying this would put at jeopardy the country’s agreements with the European Union.
