Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Switzerland’s finance minister, who had emergency quintuple coronary bypass surgery 20 September, will return to work 3 November.

He has told Pascal Couchepin, Swiss president, that his recovery is going well, neurological and physical exams are considered satisfactory by his doctors, and he will be working closely with Eveline Widmer-Schtrumpf before returning to the office. Widmer-Schlumpf, minister for justice and police, has taken on Merz’s work as finance minister during his absence.

Merz is scheduled to become president of Switzerland in January, when Couchepin’s one-year term is up. The post rotates among the seven federal councilors.
