(GenevaLunch) - Andy Murray confirmed his position as one the top players of the year by winning the Madrid Masters, defeating France’s new number one Gilles Simon 6-4 7-6 (8-6).
The world top two were both beaten in the semi-finals. Rafael Nadal lost to Neuchatel-based Simon, a player whose good humour and Gallic charm converted much of the Madrid crowd. Roger Federer was beaten 3-6 6-3 7-5 by Murray but had the compensation of passing Pete Sampras’ record as the top prize winner in tennis history, with $43.3 million.
