Geneva, Switzerland (Tribune de Geneve, Fre) - The Jonction area in Geneva was the scene of a large fire Monday night when a hangar in the old Artamis industrial zone, which has most recently been home to an alternative culture centre, caught fire.
Demolition work began Monday and the city, which had charged the demolition company with ensuring that no one was squatting in the building, says it was empty at the time of the fire. Several explosions were heard around the hangar before the fire which began at about 23:00. Housing is scheduled to be built once the city has completed ground pollution studies. Artamis was closed down because of pollution left by Geneva’s industrial services department, which for many year occupied the area.
