Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - The police strikes that have reduced the number of small fines handed out by police in Vaud has come to an end, and while a similar slowdown in Geneva continues, talks between the city and its police force appear to be making headway.

RSR reported Monday that the two sides in Vaud are close to signing an agreement this week which is expected to give police officers CHF500 for their overtime during the Euro 2008 football World Cup but more significantly to improve the status of the police in the civil servants system, a point of contention for some time. The agreement will also build in a method for agreeing on remuneration and details of any special events covered by police, in advance of the event - not the case for Euro 2008.

In Geneva, the Tribune de Geneve today reports that talks between the canton and police are also moving smoothly, although the timeframe for an agreement appears to be less clear.

Police in Vaud had asked for CHF1,500 for their Euro 2008 overtime and in Geneva they are asking CHF2,500.
