Antigua (GenevaLunch) - England were thrashed by the Caribbean selection “Stanford Superstars” in the richest prize match in cricketing history.
England captain Kevin Pietersen won the toss in the twenty over winner-takes-all match where an American tycoon promised $1 million to each member of the winning eleven. England were soon in trouble and crashed to 99 all out. Stanford’s captain Chris Gayle hit five sixes as England were completely outplayed, losing by 10 wickets. Pietersen blamed the loss on poor preparation and “distractions.” Details, Telegraph, UK
Meanwhile in the traditional form of the game India and Australia drew in a high-scoring game. India won the toss and chose to bat first in the first test. They scored a massive 613 for seven with two double centuries but Australia fought back to 577 all out. India lead the series by one test. The Indian captain Anil Kumble annouced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the match. Kumble is India’s leading wicket taker with 619 victims. He was the second bowler to take all 10 wickets in an innings. Details, Guardian, UK
