Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Swiss Federal Councilor Moritz Leuenberger and Chen Lei, Chinese minister for water resources management, have agreed after what they described as fruitful exchanges, to push for an agreement between the two countries to work together in the area of water resources dangers, in particular related to flooding.

Both are mountainous countries, the two ministers noted, with flooding and other dangers related to water from mountains. Since 2001 they have worked closely together in the area of preventive measures related to flooding, but since both rely on hydroelectric power, an accord could increase information-sharing and an exchange of expertise. Switzerland has been helping China to better predict streamflows in the Yangtse River catchment area, and China is sharing its long experience of floods with Switzerland.
