Mumbai, India (Ad Age) - Paul Polman, who in September left Nestlé in Vevey, Switzerland to take up a new job as CEO of Unilever, was in the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai last week when it was attacked by terrorists, his new company announced Monday.
Polman and other top executives of Unilever, the world’s second-largest consumer group, were about to have a dinner to celebrate the departure of CEO Patrick Cescau and the arrival in January of Polman. They spent much of the night on the floor as fighting raged, but they were pulled out at about 03:00 and taken to safety.
Polman joined Nestlé in 2006 from Procter & Gamble, and he was widely tipped to be named to the CEO job in Vevey, but Paul Brucke was given the job.
According to Ad Age, Unilever is India’s largest package goods company, with sales of over $4 billion a year, and India is Unilever’s largest developing market.
