Bern protest Sat. night prompts US to send warning to citizens

BERN, SWITZERLAND – The US Embassy in Bern is alerting American citizens to avoid the centre of Bern this evening, following a police alert for an unauthorized gathering. The alert notes:

“Swiss Police advise that an unauthorized gathering of at least 7,000 individuals will occur in the Old Town and main train station areas of Bern this Saturday, June 2, at 8:00 pm, as members of the Reithalle are calling on their supporters to gather at the Reitschule to “reclaim the streets.”  The police will be present to monitor the situation.  However, the Embassy recommends using caution in the immediate vicinity during the event.

“We remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.  If you or any of your family members experience any trouble as a result of this demonstration, please contact the Swiss police at 117.”
