Lessons learned from earlier “waves” of transitions from authoritarian rule or civil war to democracy underscore that such processes can be often volatile and violence-ridden. As countries in the 21st century embark on pathways of transition, what are the conditions in which transitions to democracy leads to political violence? And, what are the ways in which transition-related conflicts can be prevented and resolved?
