Surfaces not quite right for Spanish
PARIS, FRANCE – Rafa Nadal gave Spain its third bit of good news in as many days, winning the French Open at Roland Garros after play with Novak Djokovic was halted overnight by rain: 6-4 6-3 2-6 7-5. Nadal overtook Bjorn Borg’s record for six Roland Garros wins. Nadal was in fine form Monday after complaining Sunday of the slippery surface and poor visibility.
His complaint was the opposite of that of Spain’s Euro 2012 football team, who drew with Italy Saturday but complained afterwards that the pitch in Gdansk wasn’t watered before the match and was too dry.
If surfaces have been tough for Spanish sports teams this weekend, the recently slippery world of the eurozone provided some surer footing for the Spanish goverenment Saturday, in agreeing to up to euros 100 billion in loans for its troubled banks.
