Widespread criticism despite military promise to hand over power to elected president
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Egypt’s military is coming in for heavy criticism from outside the country for steps taken this weekend, as citizens went to the polls to elect a new president. Votes are not yet counted, with both candidates claiming to be ahead, but meanwhile the Supreme Council of Armed Forces, Scaf, declared a new constitution Sunday that “effectively gives it legislative powers, control over the budget and over who writes the permanent constitution” once it hands over power, reports the BBC. Scaf says the handover will take place later in June.
