GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Pakistan’s prime minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, was declared by the country’s Supreme Court Tuesdy 19 June to be ineligible to hold office. He was found guilty in April of contempt of court after he refused to re-open corruption cases against the president, Asif Ali Zardari. The move doesn’t appear to provide an immediate threat to political stability, reports Reuters, since the ruling party, the PPP, has a comfortable majority, but it does underscore growing tensions between the civilian government and increasingly powerful court.
