GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The head of Syria’s Olympic committee has been refused entry to the United Kingdom for the Summer Games due to links with the regime of Bashir al-Assad and its army.
The decision to deny General Mowaffak Joumaa a UK visa prior to the start of the Olympic games next month, had been taken at a recent meeting of senior government officials from the Foreign Office, the Home Office and the Department of Culture, Media and Sports.
The BBC reported Friday 22 June that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to ratify the decision.
