GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Greek police say that over 6,000 people have been detained in Athens for suspicion of being illegal immigrants.
The Geneva-based United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, has voiced concern that migrants from war-torn countries and genuine asylum-seekers could be denied the right of protection due to the massive campaign against illegal immigration being carried out in Greece.
More than 1,100 unregistered migrants were arrested while another 4,900 were brought in for questioning in what is being called the Xenios Zeus operation.
