GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Danny Al-Baaj, Syria’s representative to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva has defected, according to news agency AFP, to whom he gave an interview. “Basically, when I felt I could not help my people any more I had to move on,” he is quoted as saying.
AFP reports that he made his decision some time ago and has been in contact with a leading opposition group, Paris-based Democratic Forum. Baaj told the news agency that he is against outside military intervention but very strongly for the UN’s supervisory mission, which is documenting abuses during the conflict.
Baaj’s defection follows by a week that of Riyad Hijab, Syrian prime minister, and several other high-ranking military and government officials.
