GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – A memorial service is being held Thursday 23 August for the 34 people who died 16 August when South African police fired live ammunition into a crowd of protesters near the Lonmin-owned Marikana platinum mine. Lomin is the world’s largest producer of platinum.
Ten others, including two police officers who were hacked to death by the protesters, died during the two weeks of strikes and protests before the Marikana incident, which has caused outrage in South Africa.
The strikes, involving two of the country’s largest unions, are now spreading to other mines.
