Army makes final check on Chamoson forest fire

Chamoson, canton Valais: small fires now put out, five days after forest fire started

BERN, SWITZERLAND – The forest fire that broke out just above the vineyards of Chamoson, canton Valais, last Thursday, 23 August, is under control, with the Swiss Army making final flyover helicopter checks Monday morning, an army spokesperson told GenevaLunch.

The fire broke out after several days of hot, dry weather, with temperatures in the mid-30s C and it quickly raced up the slopes and gullies of the area called Socar, near Vérines, covering 4 hectares.

Helicopters from Air Glacier and Eagle went to work on the blaze.

Brief but heavy rainshowers Thursday unexpectedly gave a helping hand to firefighters from the area, plus army units called in to keep the fire from spreading.
