Head of UN to address Swiss parliament

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon meets with Lakhdar Brahimi, newly appointed Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for Syria, 24 August 2012

BERN, SWITZERLAND – Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general of the United Nations, will become the first head of the UN to address the Swiss parliament, 11 September.

His address, to both houses of parliament, will mark the 10th anniversary of Switzerland joining the international body.

Switzerland long held observer status at the UN, but citizens voted against joining in 1986, before a second favourable vote, in early 2002.

The country became the first in the world to join the UN based on a popular vote.
