GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – New UN Syrian special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi gave a deeply pessimistic view of the chances for success in ending the fighting in Syria, to the BBC, over the weekend, saying he sees the task as “nearly impossible”. His outline of the situation comes as activist groups said Sunday there were more than 5,000 deaths in Syria during August. Unicef says last week alone saw 1,600 deaths, reports AP.
Brahimi’s predecessor, Kofi Annan, left the post saying he had come to believe it would be impossible to complete the job of brokering peace, despite the truce agreement he negotiated.
