Solo climber falls 800m to death on Matterhorn

The Matterhorn, hugely popular with climbers, but not an easy mountain

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – A climber who appears to have been alone on the Matterhorn, based on initial investigations, fell 800 metres to his death at 08:45 Tuesday 11 September, say canton Valais police.

The body has not yet been identified; a formal identification process is underway.

He was at about 4,000 on the 4,478m high mountain when the accident occurred, for reasons that are being investigated. Other climbers who saw him fall alerted the authorities.

For safety reasons Air Zermatt was unable to collect the body before the afternoon.
