BASEL, SWITZERLAND – Roger Federer will indeed play for Switzerland in this coming weekend’s Davis Cup match in The Netherlands, the Swiss Tennis Federation announced Tuesday 11 September. Federer had created speculation about his participation by not committing himself to representing the Swiss. He will play in singles Friday. The federation says the Federer-Stanislas Wawrinka duo is heavily favoured to win.
“The world group relegation playoff is being played on outdoor clay courts. Federer has spent the past three months playing tournaments on grass and hard courts,” the Associated Press notes.
