Itinerant group too drunk, sick to leave Renens despite police orders

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – Vaud police report that after two hours of discussion late Thursday afternoon 13 September a group of about 20 caravans belonging to “gitans“, traveling people, left an area near the Renens swimming pool where they were illegally camped, but another 15 caravans remained behind.

The ones who left were escorted by police from Chavannes-près-Renens to Chatel-St-Denis, where a Fribourg police escort picked up the relay, but it is not clear where the group is heading from there.

Those left behind argued with police that they were unable to leave because they were either too drunk or had sick family members, including children. The police gave them until 08:00 this morning to vacate the land, which belongs to canton Vaud.
