Weekend accidents: wired boy starts fire, fisherman disappears

Fisherman’s boat was found drifting in Lake Geneva Saturday night

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Hot potatoes were taken a step too far in Widnau, in eastern Switzerland, Monday morning 24 September.

A 17-year-old put some potatoes and oil in a skillet, then went off to his computer, forgetting about them, writes news agency Sipa.

His mother returned home to find the house on fire. No injuries were reported.

Fisherman missing since Saturday night

A fisherman disappeared in Lake Geneva Saturday evening after taking part in a fishing competition near Clarens, in canton Vaud. The 53-year-old, who lives in Vaud, was seen heading from St Gingolph towards Locum and France but at about 19:30 his boat was found by the Société de Sauvetage de Territet (rescue group), mid-lake between Vevey and Clarens. A rescue operation searched for him until 22:00, then began again at 09:00 Sunday.

Saillon woman escapes car crash only to fall into river

A 43-year-old woman was in critical condition Monday in Sion hospital in canton Valais after she escaped injury in a road accident Sunday night but then fell into the Salentse river. The accident occurred in Saillon near the place where the Salents feeds into the Rhone. She was driving near the river and missed a bend in the road, say police, and her car slid along a bank before rolling and landing in the Salentse. The woman managed to free herself and get out of the river, but she then slipped and fell into the water. She was found by a fisherman at 10:00 Monday morning, lying in the water.

Geneva youth, 2.27 alcohol level, leaves crashed car, passengers

A 24-year-old Geneva man was found early Sunday at his home by police shortly after he left the scene of an accident in the centre of Geneva, reports the Tribune de Geneve. The driver fled after he drove into several cars before he rolled the car, which landed on its roof. His two passengers remained in the car, one of them slightly injured.
