GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – China’s first try at providing toll-free highway travel for a national holiday caused a major traffic jam starting Sunday 30 September before dawn, leaving hundreds of thousands of would-be travelers simply sitting. Sunday was the Mid-autumn festival followed by National Day on Monday, with a week off work for virtually everyone, a time to go home and visit family. Cars piled high with gifts, including traditional mooncakes, streamed towards Beijing’s 17 highway tollbooths that lead onto the country’s highway system, now the equal to that of the US road system in terms of kilometres.
