GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) gave Syria a stern warning Tuesday 4 December not to use chemical weapons. The strong words from Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen followed the disclosure by the US that Syria appears to be moving some of its four suspected stocks of chemical weapons materials, which could be a signal that the government is planning to deploy deadly weapons, possibly including mustard gas and VX nerve agent, according to Reuters. Heads of state in Britain, France and the US have issued sharp warnings to Syria that they will react if chemical weapons are used.
Earlier Tuesday Rasmussen reiterated Nato’s readiness to step in and protect Turkey, with the US, Germany and The Netherlands prepared to supply Patriot missiles.
