GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The almost unthinkable happened to the famously on-time Swiss trains late Monday: snow and ice slowed down by 30 minutes and in some cases cancelled trains on a main line, Geneva-Lausanne-Brig, which links Calvin’s city to canton Valais. Brig also serves as a main connection to Italy and much of German-speaking Switzerland.
Snow accounted for problems on lines between Basel and Lucerne, but ice played a role in interrupting train service between Coppet and Nyon, crippling the rest of the traffic on the heavily traveled Geneva-Lausanne line – which only the day before had seen new trains added, for denser service.
