Employment, job ads both up in Switzerland

BERN, SWITZERLAND – Employment in Switzerland rose in the fourth quarter of 2012 and is expected to increase again during the first three months of 2013. The number of online ads for jobs also rose strongly, two indicators that the economy is weathering the crisis that continues in neighbouring countries.

The number of employed persons rose 1.8 percent in Q42012, compared to a year earlier, with a 1.6 percent increase in the volume of jobs. The number of vacant places continues to fall.

The number of jobs increased in every region, with the strongest growth in central Switzerland and the slowest growth in Ticino. Electric equipment manufacturing, watchmaking and IT services were the strongest industries in terms of job growth in Q4.

Online job ads up 8% over a year earlier

The Swiss Monster Index, MIS (formerly called jobpilot), which measures the number of jobs advertised online in Switzerland, grew 1 point in January, but 17 points compared to a year earlier, an 8 percent increase.
