Five suspects admit to taking part in assault on woman
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – A 39-year-old Swiss woman who was sexually assaulted Friday night near Datia, in Madhya Pradesh state, by four men while two others held her husband, has filed charges in India, and several people are being questioned in connection with the case. Indian media said Sunday morning that five men have admitted to taking part in the assault on the woman.
The woman was hospitalized Friday and released Saturday, according to Swiss public broadcasting, RTS, and the man suffered slight injuries.
The pair, whose details have not been released, have been cycling across the country and were heading towards Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. They stopped near a small village where they were planning to sleep in a tent.
The victims were also robbed, and CHF174, a camera and a laptop were reportedly stolen.
Police in India continue to search for some of those involved, but according to Swiss media at least eight people have been arrested, based on the descriptions given by the couple.
The Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs expressed its shock Saturday.
