GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The Bol d’Or Mirabaud race is on this weekend, one of the most beautiful sailing events of the season, with thousands of boats small and large raising their sails and stretching out along Lake Geneva. You don’t have to be a sailor to love it, so if you’re near the lake this weekend, find a good spot and wait for the boats to come past. The opening is tonight and the race starts at 10:00 Saturday morning.

The race is straightforward, in theory: Geneva to Le Bouveret at the other end of the lake and back. Fastest boat wins. There are complications, of course, such as the many winds that blow across and around the lake. And there is the sometimes capricious weather. The forecast for Saturday is mostly sunny, 14-27C in Geneva, with thunderstorms possible later in the day.

Don’t forget your suncream!
