Swiss prepare to accept 500 Syrians

Families of Swiss Syrians to be given easier entry

BERN, SWITZERLAND – Switzerland has accepted a request from the UNHCR, the Geneva-based refugee organization, to accept 500 Syrians who already have confirmed refugee status. The Swiss foreign affairs department said 4 September it is reviewing the files and preparing a three-year integration programme that will cost CHF12 million.

Parliament must approve the credit for the pilot project, which puts Switzerland back in the business, after eight years, of actively accepting groups of refugees, rather than taking them on a case by case basis in small numbers.
