This week’s torrential floods have taken their toll in Chablais, but the syndic (mayor) of Yvorne near the hard-hit Monthey area told the wire service ATS the grape harvest will be fine. With only a month to the start of the harvest in most areas the word is not yet in on what the harvest will be like in this most peculiar weather year. The early warm start to the year means some but not all harvests will be earlier than usual this year. Yvorne is the largest wine-producing commune in canton Vaud.

For those who can’t wait for Vinea, the large Valais wine festival the first weekend in September, a mini-tasting ofered by a group of 12 noted Valais producers, takes place Tuesday, not too far from the end of Lake Geneva in Ovronnaz. It’s free and runs from 16:00-20:00. A soak in the town’s thermal baths would combine well, especially as the wine tasting takes place in the restaurant of the baths.
