Swiss Pinot Noir; a country of award-winning wines but not enough buyers

BERN, SWITZERLAND – Some 100 wine producers from French-speaking Switzerland took their worries to Bern Monday, driving tractors and rolling barrels through the streets of the capital on the opening day of the autumn session of parliament.The country’s largest wine cantons are Valais, Vaud and Geneva.

Their grief: imported wines should be fixed to quotas that are based on indigenous production. Too much wine stored in the cellars, not enough buyers, and a new harvest ready to bring in will lead to wineries going out of business, they argue.

The Swiss wine grape harvest has begun in some areas and continues until at least mid-October for the majority of grapes.
