Top awards for Swiss wines go to mix of new and old producers
BERN, SWITZERLAND – The Swiss Winemaker of the Year for 2011 is Diego Mathier from Salquenen/Salgesch (cellar: Nouveau Salquenen) in canton Valais who previously won the coveted award in 2007. He was named at a gala dinner Tuesday night 25 October in Bern that caps the Swiss winemaking year. The awards and the event are jointly organized by wine revue Vinum and Vinea, the Sierre-based wine association that organizes a number of top wine competitions, in Switzerland and elsewhere.
Other top awards were the Prix Vinissimo which went to Maurice Zufferey of Murat near Sierre in canton Valais whose red blend, “Orchis 2009”, also won the trophy in this category, and the Prix Bio, which went to Reynald Parmelin from Begnins, for his “Johanniter 2010” wine.
Four criteria are taken into consideration in naming the winemaker of the year: the number of wines nominated out of a total of 66, the number of categories in which his or her wines are nominated, the number of winning wines and the best ratio of registered wines to wines nominated.
The Prix Vinissimo is awarded to the wine with the highest number of points of all wines entered in the competition.
The gala dinner is an event filled with suspense because awards for the top three wines in 11 categories are announced, providing consumers with a list of some of the best Swiss wines on the market at the moment.
The competition allows wine producers to compare their work to that of other winemakers, but it also provides a crucial platform for the winners to present their wines to a national public.
The wines are judged by 150 professionals in a series of blind tastings over several days.
A special report on the winners and the results of the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse 2011 appears in the most recent edition of Vinum (www.vinum.ch).
