Germany (TSR, Fre) – The sport of cycling has lost one of its most loyal backers with German company T-Mobile withdrawing support for its team after 16 years. T-Mobile chief executive Hamid Akhavan said he wanted to distance his brand from doping scandals that have blighted the sport.

Earlier this month T-Mobile rider Patrik Sinkewitz was banned for one-year after being found guilty of having illegal blood transfusions. In June the Danish rider Bjarne Riis was stripped of the 1996 Tour de France title he won in a T-Mobile jersey after admitting he had taken the blood-boosting drug EPO.
