Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland (Le Temps, Fre) – Geneva and Vaud have both posted 2007 accounts this week, and both were well in the black. The next issue is what to do with the money. Le Temps raises the question with several politicians at the cantonal and communal level of a third rail line between the two cities. The autoroute and existing train service are quickly reaching their saturation points (see GenevaLunch background stories). A third rail line is not planned by the Swiss Confederation and CFF rail company in the first phase of a major rail development programme, Zeb2000.
Le Temps notes that the desire to see a third rail line and for the two cantons to work together is high. Nevertheless, there are few plans to move on it, with Vaud politicians considering it, but mainly on their own and Geneva politicians saying it’s the confederation’s job.
