Bern, Switzerland (Le Temps, Fre) – The bulk of a tab for CHF80 million in unpaid hospital bills will most likely be picked up by Swiss cantons.

The bills, for 120-150,000 people, are the result of a 2006 change to the law that allowed insurance companies to leave bills unpaid if insured clients’ premiums were not paid up to date. A change to the law has been found that would leave cantons paying the bills for people who are unable to keep up their premium payments. The insurers’ umbrella group, Santésuisse, now needs to approve the compromise amendment to the law, which go into effect in 2010.
