Geneva, Switzerland (20 Minutes, Fre) – Four parties on the left, two on the right: the combined political forces Monday announced their plan to push for a six-month maternity/paternity leave for new parents.
The leave would be flexible, with the option to take it in one chunk, spread it out over a few months or even take it sporadically until the child starts school. The one obligation would be for the father to take a minimum of one of the six months. The proposal would be funded through the canton’s existing maternity leave insurance scheme. The group is also working on a federal proposal, reports 20 Minutes, but since this would involve changing the law covering employee insurance, the process is considerably longer and in any event, may not receive enough support from other cantons.
