Lake Geneva region, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - It’s been an eventful Sunday in the political life of the Lake Geneva area and in Switzerland as a whole, with citizens going to the polls to vote on a wide range of issues. Results of key regional cantonal and federal votes:

  • Smoking bans – Vaud, Fribourg and Valais voted to ban smoking in public establishments, with tougher rules than those called for by the federal government: RSR notes the differences between the cantons’ new legislation

  • Fine arts museum in Lausanne – rejected by voters in Vaud:
  • Nyon – Daniel Rossellat, head of the Paleo Music Festival, was elected city manager, pushing for green reforms
  • Geneva – greater independence for the university and a tougher stance on a cantonal debt were both approved, with Le Temps saying the main impact of the reforms could be a change in mentality.
  • Federal votes – the status quo with marijuana illegal will be maintained, and the Swiss model for managing drug abuse will be kept; a surprise vote will now allow victims of pedophiles to go after them indefinitely; voters have refused an early retirement scheme. Details, swissinfo
