Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – International sports federations and their affiliated federations will be exempt from paying Swiss federal income tax, the Swiss Federal Council has decided, in a move intended to strengthen the country’s role as a leader in international sports administration.
Switzerland is currently home to 36 international federations and 21 other sports organizations covering a wide variety of sports, such as football, cycling, ski and swimming. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is also based here, in Lausanne.
The new rule applies only to federations that are domiciled in Switzerland and, in the case of international federations, they must be affiliated with the IOC. The change applies to the federal “direct” tax only and does not exempt the federations from sales tax, for example, nor are employees exempt from personal federal income tax.
