Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Swiss hunting laws will be revised by the federal department for the environment because of significant changes in the past 20 years to the wildlife population and the growth of popular sports, which have an impact on wildlife habitats.

The wolf and lynx populations have been growing in Switzerland for some years, creating tension between farmers who say their populations must be controlled and environmentalists who insist the diversity of species this offers is important for the overall balance of nature.  At the same time, sports such as snowshoeing and off-piste skiing have become very popular, creating stress for wildlife. Greater use of hunting areas by sports tourists has led to conflicts as well. The federal government has decided that the combination of these changes has created a situation where existing hunting regulations do not reflect today’s realities.
