Our slowdown news week at GL means you get a little list of short-short news items with sources today:

  • Logitech, based in California and Romanel-sur-Morges, Vaud, announced Tuesday that it will be cutting its workforce by 1,500 and it is revising its 2009 projections in the face of a sharp downturn in the retail market: details will be announced January 20. GenevaLunch
  • The number of companies created in Switzerland rose in 2008 by 1.3%, a total of 37,000 new registrations, while the number of companies going out of business fell by 6.1%, but if December is any indication, with a sharp rise in the number of companies closing down, 2008 could prove to be the boom before the crash. (RSR, Fre)
  • More than 30 large trees have fallen victim to recent heavy snow around Pampigny, Vaud. (La Côte, Fre, subscription)
  • Pro Natura is celebrating its 100th birthday by making the Swiss brown bear its animal of the year, focusing on getting bears back into Switzerland. The last two native bears were killed in 1904, and 100 years later the bear returned – only to cross the border out of the country in 2008 (a second one was killed). (Tribune de Geneve, Fre)
  • Coop is weathering the economic crisis well so far: 2008 was a record year for Switzerland’s second largest supermarket chain, with sales of CHF18.1 billion, up 15.1% over 2007 sales. (24 Heures, Fre)
  • Geneva and Lausanne are both well-equipped to put up homeless people for the night during this very cold period, with Lausanne in fact having only 12 of its 80 allotted spaces used by the homeless: the other beds are offered to street artists and travellers looking for very cheap accommodation. (20 Minutes, Fre)
