Eluana Englaro has for the past 17 years been at the centre of a battle between anti-euthenasia proponents and her family, after the 20-year-old was left in a coma and eventually a vegetative state by a car crash. She has now been moved to a private clinic where she will be allowed to die. A court in Milan in January ruled that her life support tubes could be removed. The Vatican has strongly opposed the family in the case, as have several lower courts. Italy allows people to choose whether or not they want life support to be maintained, but “they are not allowed to give advance directions on what treatment they wish to receive if they become unconscious,” according to the BBC.
