London, England (GenevaLunch) - Olympic champion Samuel Wanjiru won the London Marathon after the pace makers set a blistering pace that broke up the field early on. Ethiopian Tsegay Kebede, bronze-medalist in Beijing, took second place while the Olympic silver-medal winner came in third. African runners took the top eight places.
In the women’s race, the 2008 winner, Germany’s Irina Mikitenko, took first place ahead of British runner Mara Yamauchi, who is based in Japan. Russian Liliya Shobukhova finished in third place. Britain’s regular hope, Paula Radcliffe, did not race as she is suffering from a toe injury.
