"L'Encerclement"

visionsdureel_2009_nyon_postersNyon, Switzerland (Genevalunch) - “L’Encerclement: La démocratie dans les rets du néolibéralisme” took the grand prize of CHF20,000 in the international category at the Visions du Réel film festival Wednesday night 29 April. The film, by Canadian Richard Brouillette, explores the reasons behind today’s economic crisis. The film took over 12 years to develop and consisted of a number of interviews with specialists who came together to produce a narrative on how neo-liberalism shapes our times.

The second prize of CHF10,000 went to “Die Frau Mit Den 5 Elefanten” (The Woman with the 5 Elephants) by Vladimir Jendreyko. The film is a biographical portrait of a young woman’s trials during the second world war. This film also won the Prize of Suissimage and the Society of Swiss Writers SSA for the most innovative Swiss film, CHF10,000 as well as a special mention from the intre-religious jury.

Attendance is up from last year with more than 30,000 admissions, festival officials say. Festival organizers were impressed by the number of young people attending the films and the workshops, saying this is promising for the future of the festival.
