Wifi access to expand in Geneva
Geneva, Switzerland (Tribune de Geneve) - Geneva’s government-sponsored free wifi access has been deemed a success, to the extent that a total of 170 access points will be made available by the end of 2009.
Some 30,000 internet surfers have connected to the web since the beginning of the year through 156 access points in 73 locations around Geneva, including libraries, museums, social and cultural centers, even in parks and along the lakefront.
Geneva citizens approved free internet access to citizens in a 2007 popular intiative.
Pierre Maudet, the Geneva city councillor for the Radical Party (PRD), whose idea it was in 2004 to provide free access, says the expansion means coverage will improve on both sides of the lake. At a cost to taxpayers of about CHF500,000, the project is considered “generous yet not expensive.”
