swiss_alpine_tulips1_1505091swiss_alpine_tulips2_150509Lake Geneva region (GenevaLunch) – Hard to believe on a damp, foggy, drizzly Friday afternoon, but the weather people at MeteoSwiss promise sunshine and warmer temperatures starting Saturday morning. By Sunday temperatures should rise to 24-25C in most of the region.

Lake Geneva region – outdoors

It should be perfect weather for learning all about Geneva’s wine: the annual Open Day pulls in large crowds every year, so join the fun.

Details on GenevaLunch’s events page. Be smart, use public transport.

The TPG city transport company offers free shuttle buses every 20 minutes between villages. Geneva makes it very easy for you, and if your idea of Geneva is limited to the urban area, you’re in for a wonderful surprise, visiting the outlying wine villages.

Geneva's wine producers presented their new wines - 2008 whites and some 2007 reds - at the Ecole Hotelier in early May, to much praise.

Brush up on Geneva’s wines by reading about their 2,000 years of history, the grape varieties, the producers and more on the canton’s wine pages, in English.

Further up the lake it will be sunny enough to appreciate the opening of the iris gardens in Vulleriens Sunday 17 May. The 2008 iris garden photo album on GenevaLunch gives you an idea of what to expect from the 400 varieties of irises and 150 varieties of day lilies.

The tulip festival is over in Morges, but go a little higher in the Alps and Jura, and you’ll see splendid flowers everywhere, from garden tulips to wildflowers, now coming out in the meadows. The Swiss tourism office suggests six very good hikes in the Lake Geneva region, so take a hike!

Lake Geneva area, indoors for the weekend

This is the weekend to celebrate Swiss museums, with a great selection of activities around the country for International Museum Day. Consider combining a day trip to see the castle at Grandson or visit one of the nine Vaud museums open from 17:00 to midnight Saturday 16 May. Or stay closer to home: Cern’s exhibit on the science behind the film “Angels and Demons” opens Sunday 17 May.

For more events see the GenevaLunch events page, updated weekly with our editor’s selection.
