Britain’s Labour government was reeling from the shock announcement by the Home (interior) minister, Jacqui Smith, the country’s first woman in that role, that she would resign. Just a day before Britons go to the polls in local and European elections, the government is bracing for a major backlash from voters over a scandal in expense claims by Members of Parliament (MPs). The scandal has tainted all three major parties, but has particularly hit the governing Labour party. Several other MPs and ministers have announced plans to step down. Financial Times, Reuters
