Paris, France (Le Temps, Fre) – Switzerland and France Friday signed a new tax treaty that could go into effect as early as January 2010, which for the first time promises the French more help in catching tax evaders.
French Budget Minister Eric Woerth called it a “spectacular” success, saying that the Swiss had helped things move quickly, allowing him and Swiss Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf Merz to sign the agreement 12 June. In Switzerland, the date for the treaty to go into effect is less clear: the cantons must sign it and there is the possibility of a public referendum.
